Leica Lounge with Silvia Lizama | Thurs, Nov 9, 2017 | 7pm - 8:30pm
Free Event
Join us in the Leica Lounge on Thursday, November 9, 2017 with fine art photographer Silvia Lizama. Silvia will give a presentation showing how a lifetime of influences has impacted her image making process. She will show different bodies of work, talk about the inspirations behind the work and finally give brief presentation on how she hand colors her black and white photographs.
The Leica Lounge is a lecture series hosted by Leica Store Miami which features presentations by local photographers, editors, gallerists and educators. Held monthly, these free events are designed to create and inspire the local photography community through sharing images and exchanging ideas.
The Leica Lounge is kindly sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery. Participants will be able to sample some of their amazing craft beers during the event. Brooklyn Brewery is one of the largest craft breweries in the United States, producing a portfolio of traditional and experimental beers sure to impress any beer drinker.

Artist Statement:
Our daily lives are full of stress, anxiety and pressure. There’s never enough time to do the things we must do, much less time to do the things we would like to do. How often do we take a moment, to really look around, to see what’s in front of us, to see what’s in the shadows; to see the special places. Sometimes I do take the time. Sometimes I push everything else away and just look. Sometimes I’m even lucky enough to have my camera with me.
I have been photographing my world for over 40 years. I have been fortunate throughout my life time to have been able to travel to exotic places in Latin America and Europe, as well as my own neighborhood, capturing images with my camera along the way.
My images were captured in black and white film using a medium format camera or more recently digitally captured and printed in a traditional darkroom using gelatin silver paper. After printing the images I hand colored the surface with photographic oils. The carefully applied coloring makes each image unique, adds to the fictional quality and hopefully makes real the world I witness.

Visualize and be Ready Before the Moment
Thursday night I had the honor of being inducted in the Immaculata La Salle High School
Sports Hall of Fame. I was the special teams captain with football players mostly bigger than me.
After a 1975 LaSalle vs. Belen football game, a Miami News sports story quoted our team's quarterback, Bill StPierre, as saying “visualizing changes reactions into reflexes and helps to do things quicker and better.”
Visualizing is a technique I use every day as a photojournalist. Just like I would anticipate the ball carriers movements for a tackle back in the 70’s. Today, visualizing helps me prepare and be ready before the moment. I visualize and place myself in a position to capture the light, the emotion, the movement and composition all colliding in a split second for the decisive moment to tell a compelling story in a single photograph.
In the article Bill describes this technique and what is happening in my head for the last 40 + years, "like a moving picture in slow motion.”
We learned to visualize from our football coaches Carmen Grosso, Denise Hackett and Van Parsons at practice everyday,
I’m forever grateful for what I learned on the football field and how ILS prepared me for success in life.
