The Sunday Still: Flipping into history

Photojournalist Patrick Farrell has joined the blog with his weekly feature, The Sunday Still. Flipping into history  How do you capture perfection as it twists, flips and dazzles through the stratosphere? It may not be the record-setting triple-double she landed on the floor on her way to win her sixth U.S. Gymnastics championship in Kansas City, Mo., last weekend, but Getty Images photographer Jamie Squire’s eye-catching image of Simone Biles in mid-flight above the balance beam is likely to be a photo that follows her into the history books. With the Stars and Stripes as the backdrop, the moment captures the height, power and clean execution of an athlete breaking barriers – and somersaulting her way into America’s hearts. Patrick Farrell, the curator of The Sunday Still, is the 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winner for Breaking News Photography for The Miami Herald, where he worked from 1987 to 2019. He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Management at the University of Miami School of Communication.
