"The Power of the Personal Project" with LaRae Lobdell

Mark Your Calendars Saturday, April 25!

"The Power of the Personal Project"

Chasing the Light 2015 with LaRae Lobdell
Presented by Photo Workshops Miami
Hosted at the Coral Gables Museum
Have you ever asked the question: "Where do I start?",  "What next?", or "Why am I still a photographer?" At some point or another, we can get caught up in the "industry" of photography and lose ourselves and our (he)art in the demands and expectations of clients, colleagues, and social media.
Taking on a personal project is one way of re-centering ourselves and remembering why we became a photographer in the first place. It's a time of introspective work, a time to rejuvenate, a time to refine our techniques and sharpen our eyes and hearts as a photographer, and a time to re-define our purpose.

In The Power of the Personal ProjectLaRae Lobdell will share how after photographing weddings for over a decade, she re-discovered herself as a photographer and her true purpose in life through a personal project. You will hear how her photography technical skills grew from photographing friends in their homes to directing celebrities and a 20-person crew on location, how she went from small art shows in coffee shops to large-scale solo exhibits in historical buildings, and the steps she took to overcome her extreme introverted shy nature so that she could speak on camera and in public. Most importantly, she will talk about the emotions and power of sharing your gift through a personal project.

One small idea, one small personal project can have an immense positive impact for ourselves, friends, family, neighbors, city, community and even the world.

Whether you have been photographing for thirty years or just picked up your first camera, you will be inspired by this seminar.

ASMP-SFL Presents: Brian Smith – Portrait Psychology

Portrait photography is 10% technique and 90% psychology – the most important buttons you push are not on your camera. Miami celebrity portrait photographer Brian Smith will share the keys to creating thought-provoking conceptual portraits to lift you portraits to the next level. Find out how to sell your ideas to your subjects and clients and how to improvise and let go of the reigns when it leads to the best shot.

Miami, FL, March 25, 2015 --(PR.com)-- Skull images by award-winning Miami Photographer/Visual Artist Jonathan Brooks will be featured on The CW's hugely popular and award-winning television series The Vampire Diaries.

The season 6 episode, number 618, is titled I Could Never Love Like That, and airs April 16, 2015 at 8 pm.

"I've loved vampires since I was a kid," says Brooks. "From the books of Bram Stoker and Anne Rice, to films like the classic Dracula starring Bela Lugosi to the modern 30 Days Of Night."

He recalled the phone call he received in mid February. "Hey, we want to use some of your images on our little show The Vampire Diaries," said Season Six Art Director Rosa Palomo of Bonanza Productions. "Lucky us!"

The show will be using quite a few of his photographs and excitement is spreading. The photographer is having a viewing party for the episode at Deli Lane's Sunset Tavern in South Miami and has an exhibit called Darkroom scheduled at Pitman Photo in Pinecrest for the month of April.

Brooks' image Love Floats was just featured on the German TV primetime show "Nur die Liebe zählt" (Only Love Counts) on German SAT.1 Television, West Elm will soon be carrying Dreams from his Cloud series, and his image Over The Rainbow won Best In Show 2014 Photo Of The Year at the inaugural Miami Photo Salon during Miami's prestigious art week.

LEICA LOUNGE with Al Diaz Thursday, April 2, 2015

Free Event

Join us in the Leica Lounge on Thursday, April 2, 2015 with Miami Herald photojournalist Al Diaz.
Leica Lounge is a lecture series hosted by Leica Store Miami which features presentations by local members of the photography community. Held monthly, these free events are designed to create and inspire the local photography community through sharing images and exchanging ideas.
The Leica Lounge is kindly sponsored by Brooklyn Brewery. Participants will be able to sample some of their amazing craft beers during the event. Brooklyn Brewery is one of the largest craft breweries in the United States, producing a portfolio of traditional and experimental beers sure to impress any beer drinker.
About Al:

In 2014, Miami Herald photojournalist Al Diaz was presented the Humanitarian Award by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) for his efforts in the CPR rescue of baby Sebastian de la Cruz on a busy State Road 836 expressway in Miami. Diaz flagged down police after the infant stopped breathing, then captured one of the rescue’s most dramatic moments. The photograph was awarded “Photograph of the Year” by the Associated Press Media Editors (APME). Diaz believes, “A still photograph can change the course of history, affect policy, raise awareness and cause leaders to act, as in the image capturing the breath of life. Once viewed, it has inspired others to become trained in CPR techniques so they too can save a life.”
Diaz doesn’t wait to be handed an assignment—he never stops shooting. He wakes up each morning raring to tackle the waiting-to-be-photographed world. From the US invasion of Panama, balseros in Cuba, the coup attempt of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to the devastation of Hurricane Andrew and the deadly earthquake in Haiti, he has had his boots on the ground.
His photo of the Miami Heat’s glitzy launch of their “Dream Team” players—Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh—spoke to the essence of that NBA-on-steroids moment. He has photographed Super Bowls, the World Series, NCAA championships the NBA Finals, and the Olympic Games. His sense of timing and eye for the revealing shot have also personified the likes of Madonna, Paul McCartney, OJ Simpson, Britney Spears, Penelope Cruz, Shaquille O’Neal, Tiger Woods and five U.S. Presidents.
Although perfectly at ease photographing boldface names and superstar athletes, Diaz’s visual journalism is at its most poignant when he’s capturing the “common” man and woman. His tender portraits of the homeless, the hungry, and the disenfranchised in Florida won him a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.
Diaz is a member of the Miami Herald news team that won the Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for the newspaper's coverage of Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and the McClatchy President's Award for Journalism Excellence for coverage of the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.
Diaz, a Miami native, joined the photography staff at the Miami Herald in 1983 upon graduating from the University of Florida with a degree in journalism. Diaz takes pride in always being ready before the moment.

PHOTO EXHIBIT: More Land Than People by John R. Van Beekum in Wynwood

"Over the course of a year, I traveled to the Texas panhandle region to photograph friends, acquaintances and anyone I encountered in their daily lives. These images reflect the rhythm of the region."
John R. Van Beekum
Opening reception in Wynwood for
Master of Fine Arts Photo Exhibition
on the next two Saturdays, March 14th & 21st.
UM’s Art Gallery in Wynwood.
2750 N.W. 3rd Avenue

During the last five years, after I took a buyout from the Miami Herald (when it was still standing and on the bay), I have gone back to school at the University of Miami, earning my Bachelor’s Degree in 2012 and, fingers-crossed, this May I will receive my Master of Fine Arts in Photography/Digital Imaging.

The next two Saturday nights, March 14th and 21st, I will be hosting opening receptions at my University of Miami Master of Fine Arts in Photography Thesis Exhibition at UM’s Art Gallery in Wynwood.

March 14th is my official Department of Art & Art History opening. However, UM is on Spring Break until March 16th. In order to give my students (yes, I’m teaching one class–ART 210 this spring semester) and anyone else who is actually breaking, an opportunity to see the show, snack a little, drink a little, tell big lies and visit.

I’m hosting an alternate opening reception on March 21st and calling it a Friends & Family reception. I'm inviting past co-workers, friends, neighbors, family, and random people I meet on the street, to come see what kind of images I’ve been taking the past two years. Anyone I know (or don’t know yet) can come to either reception. No RSVP’s needed. If the tinyURL didn’t work, here the BIGurl: http://www.morelandthanpeople.com Y’all come.

In THE SECRET GARDEN OF LILY LAPALMA, Steber will show her dark inner child and how this naughty prankster sees the world. This is Steber's new playground and a reinvention to part of her photographic life. With decades of work behind her, Maggie is returning to the kinds of photographs she shot when she was first photographing: dark, mysterious, haunting. Says Steber, "I believe photographers need to bust out once in a while and do things that are only for them, not caring what others think. It's a very liberating feeling when one has had to keep clients' needs in mind covering stories and assignments. This is a way to reinvent yourself and surprise editors."
