AFP photographer Wakil Kohsar captures the joy of 5-year-old Ahmad Sayed Rahman as he dances on his new prosthetic leg at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Kabul, Afghanistan, on May 7. Kohsar’s low angle fills the frame with the boy, his infectious grin and the new limb, demonstrating triumph and the toll of war at once. A child of farmworkers, Ahmad lives in a province where the Taliban and the Afghan army frequently fight. He lost his right leg as a baby when he and his sister were caught in the crossfire of a battle.
