Program Description:

Celebrity portrait photographer Brian Smith shares the lessons he’s learned over the past 30 years capturing the faces of the famous and infamous as a top magazine portrait photographer. Brian will discuss his approach to editorial and commercial assignments from concept to final images, and detailing his approach to lighting and problem solving on productions both small and large. Smith will also share secrets about how to quickly capture the personality of the people you photograph and he will also discuss how personal projects can be used to generate editorial and commercial assignments, and allow your personal style to evolve and grow while generating assignments you love to shoot. Smith will share celebrity portraits of from his new book ‘Secrets of Great Portrait Photography’ to show ways that you can make everyone you photograph look and feel like a star.

Shades of Black opens at 7p.m. January 31st, 2014 in Miami at Little Haiti Cultural Center’s Gallery of Art at 212 NE 59^th Terrace, Miami, Florida. Presented by Iris Photo Collective in conjunction with City of Miami, “Shades of Black II: Colorization of the Americas” will showcase visual expressions from a diverse group of mixed media artists, painters and photojournalists.

At the heart of the exhibition will be the work of legendary photographer Herman Leonard, whose unique images have helped define the visual identity of jazz; and the work of internationally acclaimed Pulitzer Prize winner, editorial cartoonist Jim Morin.

The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through Africa, across the Atlantic, and to the Americas where the life stories and cultural diversity of the people of Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Brazil and Cuba are transformed and absorbed by African New World influences. Jazz legends come alive, sports personalities await to be crowned and attendees encounter the complexities, richness and triumphs of the “Black Experience.
”

Attendees will have an opportunity to meet and greet the featured artists. Patrick Farrell,  Joshua Prezant , Charlie Trainor Jr., Emilo Martinez, Marice Cohn Band, Jeffery A. Salter, C.W. Griffin, Cheryl Edwards, Carl Juste, Aisha Tandwe Bell, Andrew Kaufman, Lonnie Timmons III and others will be present during the festivities, which will include cocktails, beer and wine. 

The Mission of the Little Haiti Cultural Center is to provide a space that brings together people and ideas to promote, showcase, and support Afro-Latin-Caribbean cultures in South Florida.

Troubleshooting: Videolicious & iPhone Workarounds

Occasionally, uploading a Videolicious file can get bottlenecked using an iPhone at a large venues.  Recently, while at a bowl game in Orlando, Florida, my video did not upload until I left the stadium… after the game. Sometimes its slow at Sun Life Stadium. Connecting to the local WiFi is not always a solution due to firewalls that control incoming and outgoing network traffic. 

Here are a few workarounds when a video file in Videolicious will not upload.

• When you finalize and export your video using Videolicious a copy is saved in your camera roll. Find the file and email it. That’s what I ended up doing in Orlando and it worked.
• Sometimes WiFi interferes with your transmissions or Internet searches. Your activity gets bogged down. Try turning off your WiFi connection and rely on the phone service you have. It’s amazing how everything starts popping.
• For those of you transmitting images on your laptop, remember, just because you are connected to WiFi and surfing at super speeds, you may not be able to upload large images. When this happens, especially on the University of Miami or FIU campus, turn off the WiFi and use Personal Hotspot on your iPhone. The feature must be activated with your phone carrier and there is an extra fee.
• Finally, once you get good at using Videolicious and want more options, try using an App called Splice to edit then acquire the worked up clips in Videolicious. Works great for me.
