The Sunday Still: Power Pose

Photojournalist Patrick Farrell has joined the blog with his weekly feature, The Sunday Still. Power Pose Her swagger and smug smile lit up the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, so Getty Sports photographer Richard Heathcote was ready to capture Megan Rapinoe’s famous celebratory pose after she scored her final goal of the tournament on July 7, when the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team claimed victory in France. Much-memed and compared to the famous Hellenistic statue Winged Victory, the open-armed, self-assured gesture was improved only by the addition of forward Alex Morgan jumping on her co-captain’s shoulders. The image, along with the athletes’ cause for equal pay, snagged the Sports Illustrated cover – and our full attention. Patrick Farrell, the curator of The Sunday Still, is the 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winner for Breaking News Photography for The Miami Herald, where he worked from 1987 to 2019. He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Management at the University of Miami School of Communication.
