SPEAKER: Miami Photojournalist AL Diaz Presents

Ethical Dilemmas: Dealing with questions of self-imposed restrictions or self-censorship.

A discussion by Miami Herald photojournalist Al Diaz on the ethical dilemmas of dealing with questions of self-imposed restrictions or self-censorship while photographing sensitive situations that cause physical, emotional, spiritual, or psychological pain.

Questions will be raised on the ethics of photographing these traumatic events throughout a photojournalist's career. What’s the public good weighing against what's the private pain that's incurred and what’s the effect on people who are going to see these images? Are the photographs going to be too upsetting for the families of the victims or is there a greater good being served?

Diaz will discuss the responsibility of a photojournalist telling stories through images, how to visualize and capture the emotion of a decisive moment, facial expressions, hand gestures, the light, and composition, all coming together to tell a story in a compelling way in a single photograph.
