People often ask me what kind of assignments I shoot for the Miami Herald. I tell them, anything that’s fit to print but I do cover a lot of sports. What I like most is the variety of my assignments. My day can go from scrambling on breaking news to Art Miami, fistfights, basketball, football, or invasive pythons in the Florida Everglades. Here’s a good example of what I photographed in the last seven days.

Former Miami Dolphins Running Back Larry Csonka

Last week I met up with Larry Csonka during the Miami Dolphins Fifty Seasons Halftime Presentation. I quickly showed Csonka my photo of him scoring against the Chicago Bears in 1979. Thanked him for helping me build the foundation that launched a life long career in photojournalism. That photo along with others got my foot in the door for internships and eventually a staff position at the Miami Herald. Several minutes later Csonka reacts to seeing me again as we walk off the field. B/W shot with a Canon F1, manual focus 135/2.8 from the open side end zone at the ole Orange Bowl Stadium.

Kicking off Football Season 2015 with Photojournalist Al Diaz

Al Diaz aldiaz305@aol.com
Football season, my favorite time of year!  Kicked it off by photographing three winning teams. This weekend I traveled to Washington DC as the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Redskins 17-10.

On Friday night in Boca Raton, the Hurricanes stormed into FAU stadium with a weather delay during the game that lasted over an hour. The University of Miami defeated Florida Atlantic University 44-20.

The previous week in Orlando FIU Panthers roared into UCF but barely squeaked by with a 15-14 win and the U trounced Bethune-Cookman at newly renovated Sun Life Stadium 45-0.

On September 3, the Miami Herald published my football preview covers featuring Ndamukong Suh for the Mami Dolphins, Brad Kaaya for the University of Miami, Richard Leonard for Florida International University, Flanagan High’s Devin Bush Jr. for Broward High Schools and Central High’s Donovan Thompson for Miami-Dade High Schools.

My favorite shot is of Flanagan’s Devin Bush Jr. That image was shot in a hot tub overlooking a pool.

I used a black muslin background on a backdrop stand weighted down with sand bags. On either side I used two light stands with two Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT elevated to about six feet. At the bottom of the each light stand I placed two more Canon 600 strobes attached with Manfrotto 244RC Variable Friction Magic Arms. The rim light backlit the water nicely. For the main light I used a fifth Canon 600EX- mounted on a Manfrotto 025BS Super Boom Arm with Pivoting Clamp boom attached to a Manfrotto Cine Stand 008 with Casters.

Below and off to the left I used a Photoflex Litepanel 39x39" Aluminum Frame reflector for fill.

By the time we were ready it was dark. The strobes are all set to high speed sync so I could shoot at a shutter speed of 1600 at f/3.5, ISO 500 on the Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR Camera with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM AutoFocus Telephoto Zoom Lens – USA.

I triggered the devices using a Canon Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT.

The toughest part was getting the beam of light from the strobe mounted to the boom to strike the subjects face. The high-speed sync also causes the batteries to drain quicker which caused a few misfires. Bush made several attempts at leaping out of the water until I finally captured an image with his hair looking hydro electric!

PHOTOS: Football Season Is Back!

These are my season preview covers published today in the Miami Herald. Last night I photographed the Miami Dolphins as they hosted the St. Louis Rams at Sun Life Stadium. Last week it was against the Dallas Cowboys.

Photojournalist Joe Rimkus Jr. Reflects On His 40-Year Career At The Miami Herald

For the first time since the Miami Dolphins have started playing football, there won't be a Joe Rimkus on the sidelines.
By Joe Rimkus Jr.
My father worked as a photographer at the evening newspaper, The Miami News, covering everything from John F. Kennedy to the Miami Dolphins. I followed in his footsteps and started work at the Miami Herald in 1973 while still attending Florida International University. At first I worked in the photo lab developing and printing reporters film from all the Miami Herald bureaus all over the State, gradually working my way up to staff photographer. I’m now retiring after 40 years photographing history.

I mainly worked in the Broward County bureau of the Herald, but I often covered news and sports in Miami including the Dolphins, Florida Marlins, several Super Bowls, college championships, the University of Miami football team and traveling to Omaha with UM for the College World Series.

Some of my most memorable assignments were covering the Olympics for Knight-Ridder and then McClatchy newspapers. The best time was the Torino Olympics. Based in the Italian Alps in a ski condo with Alan Greth of the Contra Costa Times, I learned fast how to cover sports I’ve never heard of like snowboard cross competition. Living in South Florida I never had much experience covering luge, bobsled, ski jumping, halfpipe and curling. Alan and I had a good time working during the day and eating "anti-stress spaghetti" in a family run great Italian restaurant in this 500 year-old town.

One of my stories I often tell was the time I was covering the NFC Championship game at Soldier field with the wind chill at minus 30 degrees. For a Florida boy it was quite the education on how not to shoot in cold weather. Besides my film getting brittle and tearing from the cold, my Canon T90's viewfinder flashed HELP then died. Frozen up!

For now, my time will be split time between Sunrise and Vero Beach where I have my "retirement" home. I’m hoping to catch more fish, reduce my golf handicap, take art classes at the Vero Beach Museum of Art, do some freelance and finally take it easy.

It’s been a whirlwind ride and a great experience working with some of the greatest photographers and journalists anywhere. I've learned an awful lot about photography and life from our staff and I will never forget that.....

Bye,

Joe
