The Sunday Still from Patrick Farrell: Lunch in Harlem

Photojournalist Patrick Farrell will be joining the blog with his weekly feature, The Sunday Still. Farrell selects one image each week that showcases the best photojournalism by photojournalists from around the world. The feature runs weekly in The Sunday Long Read. The goal of the newsletter, edited by Don Van Natta Jr. and Jacob Feldman, is to put the week’s best journalism in your hands every Sunday morning.
The Sunday Still
from Patrick Farrell

Lunch in Harlem

A month after California Democratic Sen. Kamala D. Harris announced her bid to become the first black female president, AP photographer Bebeto Matthews drew the press pool position to shoot a Feb. 21 meeting between Harris and Rev. Al Sharpton at Sylvia’s in Harlem. The famous soul food restaurant is the same one where Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders met with Sharpton to (unsuccessfully) seek his endorsement. Although Matthews’ photo would be shared, other New York photographers weren’t about to miss their shot. Matthews positioned himself inside and rose above a standard meeting image by including the photo pack outside, pressed against the cold window, to emphasize the importance of the historic sit-down.

Patrick Farrell, the curator of The Sunday Still, is the 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winner for Breaking News Photography for The Miami Herald, where he has worked since 1987. He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Management at the University of Miami School of Communication.

WISH BOOK: Parents struggle to provide glasses for young sons, who suffer from light sensitivity

The sun is out. It is a beautiful Miami winter day. Greila Javier would love to take her three children to a park or the beach, or even a stroll around the block. Oh, what she would give to spend Saturday mornings watching her 6-year-old son, Alexis, play a sport, like some of the other kids in his kindergarten class.
Instead, most days, she keeps her kids inside their dimly-lit one-bedroom, one-bath Northwest Miami duplex, where the family of five sleeps in one room and keeps its belongings in one closet. Alexis and his 21-month-old brother, Erick, suffer from an inherited, degenerative eye condition called Rod/Cone Dystrophy, which causes extreme light sensitivity. Every time they step outside, their eyes shut.
Greila Javier de Benavides holds her son Erick, 1, as her daughter Solimar, 4, at left and Alexis, 6, at right, look on while outside their home in Miami on Dec. 4, 2018. The boys are visually impaired and need specialized glasses. The family has financial difficulties. Meanwhile, mold issues in their home have forced them to get rid of a couch, two mattresses, clothing and several toys.

Wednesday, December 5th, 2018 at 7:30 PM   |   Learn More

Join us on Wednesday, December 5th at 7:30 p.m. for a gallery opening with Miami's own Maggie SteberThe Secret Garden of Lily LaPalma is an imaginative dream sequence produced by Steber for which she was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation Grant in 2017. The ongoing series documents Maggie’s subconscious and imagination in photographs captured by her alter-ego, Lily LaPalma. The exhibit includes more than twenty color photographs, each treated to reveal depth and mystery. The series not only reflects countless influences from Steber’s life dating back to her childhood, it also represents a complete reinvention of herself, departing sharply from the documentary aesthetic for which she is known.
