Flipping into history
How do you capture perfection as it twists, flips and dazzles through the stratosphere? It may not be the record-setting triple-double she landed on the floor on her way to win her sixth U.S. Gymnastics championship in Kansas City, Mo., last weekend, but Getty Images photographer Jamie Squire’s eye-catching image of Simone Biles in mid-flight above the balance beam is likely to be a photo that follows her into the history books. With the Stars and Stripes as the backdrop, the moment captures the height, power and clean execution of an athlete breaking barriers – and somersaulting her way into America’s hearts.
Patrick Farrell, the curator of The Sunday Still, is the 2009 Pulitzer Prize-winner for Breaking News Photography for The Miami Herald, where he worked from 1987 to 2019. He is currently a Lecturer in the Department of Journalism and Media Management at the University of Miami School of Communication.
